The Brief
Spier wanted to share something rare about who they are, that the people working their land aren't running a commercial estate. They're custodians. Three voices, three crafts, one philosophy: leave it better than you found it.
The Challenge
Documentary, not commercial. We let the subjects lead. Mr Lando on the vines he's tended for twenty-three years. Angus on regenerative agriculture and why he's banned the word sustainability. The team restoring indigenous and endemic plants where invasive species had taken over. The land was the brief. The voices were the script.
The strongest documentary work doesn't explain. It listens. We spent the time to find the moments where each custodian wasn't performing, they were just describing the land they love, in the way they actually talk about it. The film doesn't argue for regeneration. It lets the people doing the work argue for it themselves.
“This land doesn't belong to us. We're just the custodians of this farm, and everyone working on it needs to leave it in a better state.”
“Sometimes the best direction is knowing when to step back and let the land speak for itself.”
